How we compare
Splitting a model across machines isn't new. Running it as a product is.
Open-source projects already pool models across hardware. U4x is the enterprise layer around that idea: enrollment, concurrency, security, and support. Here is the honest comparison, not a straw man.
| U4x | exo / llama.cpp RPC | Petals | Pooled | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Built for | Firms, 50–500 desks | Self-hosting tinkerers | Volunteer public swarm | A trusted room of friends |
| Setup | Head + one-time enroll | Manual per-node config | Manual, join a swarm | Browser tab, no install |
| Concurrency | Hundreds of parallel jobs | Mostly single-stream | Shared public queue | One at a time |
| Data stays private | In-building, encrypted | Yes, but you build it | No — public peers | No — shared room |
| No inbound ports | Yes, outbound-only | You configure it | No | N/A (browser) |
| Remote desks | Encrypted relay | Your own VPN | Over internet | WebRTC between tabs |
| Support & SLA | Commercial | Community | Community | Community |
| License | Commercial | Open source | Open source | Open source (MIT) |
If you have the staff to run exo or llama.cpp RPC yourself, that is a real option and we will say so. U4x earns its keep when data must stay in the building, many people need the model at once, and someone needs to own the result.
